Solar Eclipse of August 12, 2026: What We Saw From Verdun-sur-Garonne

August 12, 2026 will remain a special date for astronomy enthusiasts in the Tarn-et-Garonne region. That Wednesday evening, the Moon moved between the Earth and the Sun to deliver the first major solar eclipse visible from Europe since 1999. From Verdun-sur-Garonne, about thirty kilometers from Toulouse, the show was anything but a minor event.

A partial eclipse… but a spectacular one in Occitania

The path of totality, where the Moon fully covered the Sun, crossed the North Atlantic, Iceland, Greenland, and northern Spain. In mainland France, the eclipse remained partial, but Occitania was among the best-placed regions in the country. In Toulouse, the obscuration rate reached about 97.8% of the solar disk, one of the highest figures among major French cities. In Verdun-sur-Garonne, just a stone’s throw from Toulouse, the coverage was in the same range: the Sun was reduced to a thin crescent by the end of the day.

The event began around 7:20 PM, reaching its maximum around 8:20–8:25 PM, as the Sun was already sitting low on the western horizon. A clear horizon and mild sky made all the difference in enjoying the show right to the end.

Why this eclipse was exceptional

You have to go back to the total eclipse of August 11, 1999 to find a comparable event in Europe. The next chance to see such a high obscuration rate from France won’t come around again for several decades. Another detail that added to the magic of the evening: the annual peak of the Perseids fell on the very same night, giving observers who stayed out a rare double feature: an eclipse at dusk, followed by shooting stars once night fell.

Observing an eclipse safely

A few essential reminders for anyone who missed the August 12 eclipse, or who’s already preparing for the next celestial rendezvous:

  • Never look with the naked eye, not even for a few seconds, even when the Sun is only very partially covered.
  • ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses are essential for direct observation.
  • For an instrument (refractor, telescope), a solar filter matching the aperture must be fitted at the front of the instrument, never at the eyepiece.
  • Photography or instrumental observation require specific filtering, different from what’s used for naked-eye viewing.

What’s next?

Two more major eclipses are worth watching for in the months ahead: a total eclipse on August 2, 2027 and an annular eclipse on January 26, 2028, both visible from Europe or nearby. Plenty of time to properly prepare your gear before then.
